Book Review: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Title: Vampire Academy
Author: Richelle Mead
First Published: August 16th 2007

Genre: Vampires
Pages:332
Rating: 4 out of 5

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

This book is very...sensual, if that is the right word. Which is normal and not necessarily means freaky. To be honest, I think most people are attracted to 'underworld' stories for its sensuality. The animal instinct these creatures possessed is both scary and sexy at the same time. Throw in the rage of puberty, and you have one hell of a book...

I wouldn't elaborate much, but these are my reasons why VA is worth reading:

* Richelle Mead presented a whole new insights of the vampire world, which consists of Moroi (the highest rank), dhampir (their guardians), and Strigoi (good vampires gone bad). Complete with their intrigues and conspiracies and social-political issues.

* The kickass characters. A pat in the back for Rose: you're not slutty, you're just a girl wanting to have fun and ways to release those wild hormones. A knock in the head for Lissa, a slap (real hard) in the face for Mia (why? read it yourself and you'll know). A high five for Christian. And...an adoring look for Dimitri (badass guys always make you weak).

*The story building. Explanations came in the right times and places.

Overall, 4 stars. It could've been better, without those sexy-mexy scenes and Rose talking about sex so very often.
I recommend it to people who love vampire books and romance :)

4/5 stars

OH, I hate it when a book talks about the steamy scenes so much. I like the idea and adding it to my TBR. GREAT read, Trayche

I actually picked this book up for $3. I had hoped it was worth it. I still don't know, though, as it sits on my shelf and collects dust.

But, every time I see this series I am reminded of Vampire Knight, which is a manga. It's really good. =)
