Book Review: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Title: Mockingjay
Author: Suzanne Collins
First Published: August 24th 2010

Genre: YA, Dystopian
Pages: 390
Rating: 5 out of 5

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

 At a Glance:
I read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire back to back last year. I really loved them! I always wanted to read Mockingjay, but I got the chance to read it this year. I'm so glad I read it! Few friends told me that the book is a dissapointment, and that it's not as good as the first two. I don't know what they were talking about! Mockingjay was magnificent! I loved it!

Romance:
There isn't a lot of romance in Mockingjay. I mean, almost not at all.

Action:
A LOT OF ACTION!!!!! Every single chapter was filled with action! It made the plot go so fast!

Heroine:
Katniss Everdeen is my favorite character of all times! I mean, she is so strong, confident and yet, she is herself! In these three books she goes in soo many emotional rides, I feel sorry for her. Those two deaths at the end almost broke my heart!

Hero:
Peeta, Finnick and Gale... All great heros! They did all to protect Katniss, their loved one. Though, Suzanne Collins decided that three heros is a lot, so decided to break out hearts and kill one of them.

Things I liked:
I liked that it was full of action. I liked District 13. I liked the epilogue.

Things I disliked:
Sometimes I thought that the writing style was like... to much. Like, sometimes I'd forget what Katniss was trying to say or think when she started that thought.

Would I recommend it?
YES FOR SURE. This book is a total must read. Like it's preceders, it's an action paced, full of greatness novel. It will make you think about yourself and the world around you.

5 out of 5 stars

*Thanks again to Mrs Michelle for sending me this book. You are so good and so nice! I have only good words to say for you. Thanks!

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: The Immortal Rules

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: Book Reviews, Interviews, Giveaways and more...

Review of The Iron Queen

Review of The Iron Knight
Interview

Welcome to another post of the Julie Kagawa Month.

"In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity."Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of "them." The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked--and given the ultimate choice. Die...or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend--a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what--and who--is worth dying for.

The Immortal Rules has to be one of the best vampire books ever! I mean, I don't read vampire books alot, but I read synopsis of other vampire books. They all sound ilke Twilight rip-offs. This one stayed true to the original vampires (not-sparkling one) yet it had one of the most original concepts ever!

Allie would have to be one of the best characters ever! She was so fierce, strong, so brave and funny at times!
A real kick ass heroine! Like all of Julie Kagawa characters she was well developed, with a good background history and she looked very real.

When we got introduced to Kanin, her creator, mentor and teacher, I though that he'd be Allie's love interest. I was wrong. Zeke got introduced and he just.. blew my mind. I think he has to be my favorite male characters of all Julie Kagawa books!

Allie and Zeke's relationship developed very well. It wasn't insta-love (thank God). Like Meghan and Ash's romance, this one too developed gradually and surely. It wasn't the main focus of the book, which I love the most!

So, Julie Kagawa does it again. She's written an unbelievably divine book, with so many emotions in it! It's a book you don't want to miss. It's fresh, full of action with a little bit of romance.

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: The Iron Knight

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: Book Reviews, Interviews, Giveaways and more...

Introduction to Julie Kagawa Month
Review of The Iron King
Review of The Iron Daughter
Review of The Iron Queen
GIVEAWAY

Welcome to another post of the Julie Kagawa Month.
Today, it is time for me to review The Iron Knight
"My name--my True Name--is Ashallayn' darkmyr Tallyn. I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her. My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl..."To cold faery prince Ash, love was a weakness for mortals and fools. His own love had died a horrible death, killing any gentler feelings the Winter prince might have had. Or so he thought.
Then Meghan Chase--a half human, half fey slip of a girl--smashed through his barricades, binding him to her irrevocably with his oath to be her knight. And when all of Faery nearly fell to the Iron fey, she severed their bond to save his life. Meghan is now the Iron Queen, ruler of a realm where no Winter or Summer fey can survive.
With the unwelcome company of his archrival, Summer Court prankster Puck, and the infuriating cait sith Grimalkin, Ash begins a journey he is bound to see through to its end--a quest to find a way to honor his vow to stand by Meghan's side.
To survive in the Iron Realm, Ash must have a soul and a mortal body. But the tests he must face to earn these things are impossible. And along the way Ash learns something that changes everything. A truth that challenges his darkest beliefs and shows him that, sometimes, it takes more than courage to make the ultimate sacrifice.

WOW Just WOW Where do I even start?
Much like Meghan, Ash's voice is strong throughout the narration. Thank God Ash and Puck's feud was over! It seems like it existed only when Meghan was around. It was so interesting to unravel their past and to hear a completely different story of them. That helped me love them even more than I did before.

As proved in the previous three books, Kagawa’s story building is flawless. Through her narration, she made every single aspect of her settings come alive. As before, Kagawa’s Fairy World was as much interesting as it was frightening. She literally takes her readers to the End of the World and back all they while keeping them on the edge of their seats.

I think this one was the most interesting of the series. When Ash goes to the End of the World, he must pass a series of extremely hard tests to reach his goal. These chapters were the most interesting and the most fun to read.Julie Kagawa took the storyline to every place I didn’t expect and the some…and it was wonderfull!! As before, her writing kept me reading until I found myself at the end. Though it was sad to see such a great story at an end…I must say that I leave it with a smile on my face and the intentions to re-read it countless times in the future to come. Still, I’m excited to see what Puck’s story will be.

Pick this up, and if you haven’t read the rest, don’t even hesitate in doing so.

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: The Iron Queen

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: Book Reviews, Interviews, Giveaways and more...

Welcome to another post of the Julie Kagawa Month.
Today, it is time for me to review The Iron Queen.

My name is Meghan Chase.
I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.
This time, there will be no turning back.

WOW. Just wow. Julie Kagawa did it again!

I loved everything about this book.
Unpredictability. Romance. Adventure. You name it! I have never read a book that has made me as deeply emotionally attached as I am with the Iron Queen.

Just when you thought you had gotten to know all the characters well, you learn even more about them. I've really enjoyed watching them grow over this series, especially Meghan. With so many responsibilities on her shoulders, she proves to be a strong and determined heroine. We get to see her relationship with Ash grow and flourish. We see how loyal and brave she is, and how she becomes a great leader.

First of all, Julie Kagawa’s writing has improved with each book. I found everything to flow smoothly, dialogue sounded natural and her descriptions were amazing!

Second of all, The world building is unreal. Unreal! Nevernever was so vivid in my mind, the way she described both the characters and the setting were beautiful.
And the ending, OH MY. The ending was..... heartbreaking, touching, to die for.

It almost made me cry! And I never cry.

Mrs. Kagawa... I love your series. They are awesome books.
To others, I HIGHLY recommend you reading this series. NOW. Yes, right now. Go get the books, and I'll be waiting to read your reviews to see what you think. :)

5/5 stars.

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: The Iron Daughter

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: Book Reviews, Interviews, Giveaways and more...

Welcome to the second post of the Julie Kagawa Month. If you don't know what this is, you should check out this post, and then come back here.
Last week I posted my review of The Iron King, the first book in the Iron Fey series. You can read it here
Now it's time to review the equally good (or even better) sequel, The Iron Daughter.

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

For the second time, Julie Kagawa did the nearly impossible. She wrote a series, that keeps getting better! I think I loved The Iron Daughter even more than the first book! I have big hopes for book three.

I will really try to write this review without any spoiler of book one, but be aware. And why the heck haven't you read it yet?

The Iron Daughter leaves off right where The Iron King stops. All our favorite characters are back in all there glory and then some!
Meghan.... What can I say about her? I adored her in book one. But at the begining of this book, she was so not herself. I just wanted to slap her! Thank God she got better throughout the rest of the book. Now I can say that I love her even more.
Ash and Puck were once again beautifully written! I can't say nothing bad about them. Some of their moves were unpredictable *cough AshAndVirus cough* But that's what we are all looking in a book, stuff that we don't imagine happening to our favourite characters!

The plot was truly unbelievably brilliant. Julie Kagawa really out did herself. She once again captured the attention of her readers, delivering a pure and griping plot, in an engagin, entertaining and enchanting  world!

And the end of the book.......Speechless. I did not see that coming.

I could really say that Kagawa is a genious for creating everything in this book, and making me fall in love with it.Loved every second of this epic adventure and I am crazily waiting to see how this beloved series will continue in The Iron Queen.

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: The Iron King

JULIE KAGAWA MONTH: Book Reviews, Interviews, Giveaways and more...

Welcome to the first post of the Julie Kagawa Month. If you don't know what this is, you should check out this post and find out more about it.
Today, you'll get to read my short review of the first book in the Iron Fey Series (and first ever Julie Kagawa book), The Iron King.

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

This book was.... outstanding! I mean, from page one to page three hundred and sixty six I was totally blownaway by the awesomness Julie Kagawa has written.

First of all, I have to say that this is my first Fae book ever. I have never read this type of story, yet it becomes one of my favorite books. Julie Kagawa is a master in creating a totally unique world, with beautifully written characters.

I loved the character of Megan Chase. I mean, through out the whole book we can see her grow up, become an independent girl. She is the kind of character you admire, and love to read about: strong, selfless, stubborn...

I also loved Ash's character. He is so different from the male characters I've read in other books. He is compelling and powerful.
I should not forget to mention the other main characters Puck and Grim. They also have their own stories and did not fade away in the background with their personas, which something that usually happens in other books. Not in Julie Kagawa's mind.

The Iron King just has it all, action, drama, a little bit of romance here and there. All of the twists were unpredictable, and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next.

Overall, The Iron King is a fantastic book and I absolutely loved it! I can't wait to read the second book and find out what will happen next.

Book Review: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Title: Tiger Lily
Author: Jodi Lynn Anderson
First published: July 3rd, 2012

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Retelling
Pages: 292
Rating: 5 out of 5

Before Peter Pan belonged to Wendy, he belonged to the girl with the crow feather in her hair. . . .
Fifteen-year-old Tiger Lily doesn't believe in love stories or happy endings. Then she meets the alluring teenage Peter Pan in the forbidden woods of Neverland and immediately falls under his spell.
Peter is unlike anyone she's ever known. Impetuous and brave, he both scares and enthralls her. As the leader of the Lost Boys, the most fearsome of Neverland's inhabitants, Peter is an unthinkable match for Tiger Lily. Soon, she is risking everything--her family, her future--to be with him. When she is faced with marriage to a terrible man in her own tribe, she must choose between the life she's always known and running away to an uncertain future with Peter.
With enemies threatening to tear them apart, the lovers seem doomed. But it's the arrival of Wendy Darling, an English girl who's everything Tiger Lily is not, that leads Tiger Lily to discover that the most dangerous enemies can live inside even the most loyal and loving heart.
From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "Peaches" comes a magical and bewitching story of the romance between a fearless heroine and the boy who wouldn't grow up.

First of all, I was not a fan of this particular Disney story. Sure, I did see the movie and the cartoon but somehow I never really connected with the story until now.

Some would say it's a story about love but I think the most important part was about growing up. We meet Tiger Lily, a wild and fearless Native girl through the eyes of Tinker Bell. Tink never appealed to me because she always stuck her nose where it didn't belong but in this case I'm grateful for it, otherwise we wouldn't get to see witness this incredible story. Tiger Lily meets Peter Pan by accident and they can't stay away from each other after that. They complete each other perfectly. They are both fearless and strong. Tiger Lily was not used to sharing her feelings and thought with others while Peter can. Because of this she appeared as cold and insensitive even though she cares a lot for the friends, father and the tribe.

Oh,gosh. Let me tell you about Peter. Never in all my 23 years I would thought of saying I like him because everyone knows him as the wild boy he really is but in this novel he shined. He is a true leader and you can see why the Lost Boys look up to him so much. Every girl in the story is in love with him either it is Tiger Lily, Tinker Bell or all the mermaids in the lagoon, even she, who-shall-not-be-named.

Jodi did a wonderful, exquisite job painting us the picture of Neverland. The village of the Native tribe, Lagoon with the mermaids, forests with mysterious beasts and creatures even dinosaurs(Yes, dinosaurs!),rivers where Tiger Lily went to swim with her best friend Pine Sap, the burrow where the Lost Boys lived.

A girl who shall not be named(pst! It's Wendy) did appear later on and I have to say I don't like her at all. Before reading I did thought Peter would forget about Tiger Lily fast but it didn't happen. First love always stays with you and you get a glimpse in his mind through the letter in the end of the book which made me tear up for Tiger Lily who will stay young forever; Peter who finally grows up and Tinker Bell who loves with her little heart.

Saying Goodbye...For Now

You know that sad feeling when you finish reading a great book series, and you just want to tear everything apart and cry a little bit because it's over? Well, I didn't. Untill now.
I've never  fully read a whole series before. I still have to read Requiem ( to finish the Delirium trilogy). I still have to read New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn to finish the Twilight series. I still have to read HP 3,4,5,6 and 7 to finish the Harry Potter series.
But, I finished reading Uglies... I wish there were more books...
First, let me introduce you to this series first. Uglies, is a four-book series by {the amazing} Scott Westerfeld. Set in a dystopian future where everyone who looks like we do now (normal) is called Ugly. At age 16 they get a surgery which turns them into Pretties, and pretty brainwashed., aside from everything.

If you've read my self-called reviews of Uglies and Pretties, you would get the idea of how much I loved them. After reading Specials and Extras last week, I decided to do a post with four reviews in one (since Uglies and Pretties didn't get the reviews they deserved) LOL
Now, you'll get to sort of understand why these books amazed me. And you'll understand why I recommend them to every reader. I'll try not to put any big spoilers there, since You'll get to read this books, sometime in your life. Here we go.

UGLIES:

Uglies introduces us with Tally Youngblood, an Ugly. She wants to be a Pretty, and she'll get to be in few months. But, her friend Shay doesn't want it. Tally goes on a big journey in which we discover the new, original and amazing ideas Scott Westerfeld had in his mind.
Right away, from the first page I got hooked!!! It just purely amazed me the kind of mind (LOL) Westerfeld has. He is so original in his ideas, and so creative. I just... want to be him!

PRETTIES:

I won't tell a description of this one, since you'll get spoiled. I'll just say that once again, Westerfeld blow my mind away! The book was so addictive! We can see how Tally's character was different from what she was in Uglies. All the ideas that he had, about the Smoke, about the New Pretty Town, about Uglyville are just so original and so creatively beautiful!!!! My favorite scenes were when we found out about the Cutters. ;) You'll now what I mean, when you read it.

SPECIALS:

I loved Specials so much! I think it was the best one of the original trilogy. Tally was again, different than when she was an Ugly or a Pretty in the first two books! Once again, she and Shay go on a dangerous journey, and start something big, something maybe they didn't want to happen. I LOVED, just loved how the book ended.

EXTRAS:

In Extras, we are introduced to a brand new characters, this time from a new country from Asia. Three years, after the mind-rain Aya's town is completely changed than what it was before the mind-rain. Now, popularity, fame and celebrety rule. Out of the Uglies series, this one is definitely my favorite one. Here's why. Everything, that happened in Aya's town, is like what we have today. The popular people and the celebreties get everything they want. To stay at the top, they always have to be provocative and make scandals. The book just felt real, you know what I mean? That's why I loved it the most!

There you have it. Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extras. Four books that you need to read! Must!
This books aren't just plain YA fiction. They are more than that. Every book is full of "hidden" messages. Uglies and Pretties teach us to be who we are. Not to let someone bigger than us control us, tell us what to do. Specials is very enlightening. If the world keeps doing what we do now, it might lead us to what happened at the Rusty era explained in throughout the series.

And that is why Uglies is my all time favorite book series!

And yep, I'm saying Goodbye to this series, but just For Now. I'm 100% sure that I'll be rereading it a few more times, just to remind myself of the beautiful times I had reading these books.

I want to thank Scott Westerfeld for writing this books! You're awesome, man!
Another big thanks to mrs. Mary Ting and mrs. Michelle for giving me the opportunity to read this books!
Finally, thank You, for reading the whole post. LOL You rock!

Book Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Title: Under the Never Sky
Author:  Veronica Rossi
First Published: February 7th 2012

Genre: YA, Dystopian
Pages: 374
Rating: 5 out of 5

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.
DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.
Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.
Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.
If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

My review:

I can't express how much I love this book right now. I am impressed with Veronica Ross.

Under the Never Sky has so much going on.The dystopian world Veronica Rossi has created is spectacular. You have a government within Reverie trying to cover up the loss of one of its pods and an attack on Aria, so they send her from her cozy little world into the real. Into the Death Shop.

Outside, you have world dying from the Aaether storms. There are different tribes, who fight to survive in the cruel world. There are also people who eat other people, the cannibals, and people with powers, they call senses. There you have Peregrine aka Perry. So original, right?

Aria and Perry are people of two completely different words, and collide to form an unlikely allegiance. At first, they think of each other as barbaric and wild or soft and protected but the closer they get to each other, the more on edge you would feel. I can honestly say that this book was magical.

This is no insta-love. No No. The romance went just like I wanted. Slowly developing and then BAM. Some other authors should learn from Mrs. Veronica.

Also, I loved the other characters through the story. Roar was a great character, Marron also. I was suprised with Cinder. And Vale... can't say much about him. I DID NOT EXPECT THAT TO HAPPEN WITH HIM AT THE END OF THE BOOK.

So, there you have it. A perfect dystopian world. Perfect romance. Great characters. So many "I did not expect that to happen" scenes.
Under the Never Sky goes to my TOP 5 Dystopian books.
